Mover, storage provider or furniture installer: choose by task

Assign transport, storage, delivery and assembly to the right providers and keep their service scopes and handoffs distinct.

MIMO field notes · Delivery & installation · · MIMO editorial team

Moving furniture, storing it and installing it are different services. One company may offer several, but the actual scope should be confirmed instead of inferred from its name or directory category.

Break the job into handoffs

List collection, transport, storage, delivery, assembly and final placement. Identify the provider responsible for each stage and the record used when responsibility changes. A mover transporting a sofa may not assemble a new bed or mount storage furniture.

For an interstate household move, use FMCSA’s official resources to research movers and the relevant process. For work within one state, check the appropriate state requirements. A general service listing is not itself a registration or insurance check.

Define storage conditions and access

Ask what is being stored, how it is identified and who can authorize release. Confirm the actual terms, access process and handling responsibilities. Product instructions may matter for storage and transport; do not assume all furniture can be stacked, compressed or kept in the same conditions.

Keep an inventory of stored items with product references and condition records. An unlabeled group of cartons is difficult to reconcile later.

Connect the installer to the actual products

Provide the installer with the model, components, manufacturer’s instructions and approved placement. Confirm whether any tasks require a separate qualified provider or property approval.

Provider role Scope to verify
Mover or carrier Collection, transport and delivery endpoint
Storage provider Inventory, access and release terms
Installer Assembly, approved placement and completion checks

Before the job, make sure each provider knows where its work ends and whom it hands off to. Afterward, reconcile items and exceptions.

This role map can be simple. Its purpose is to stop one vague instruction—“handle the furniture”—from leaving transport, storage or installation unresolved. Choose providers for the work they actually perform, with current terms and appropriate checks.
