San Francisco apartment furnishing: survey the delivery route first

Check loading, entrances, stairs, elevators and assembly constraints before selecting furniture for a San Francisco apartment.

MIMO field notes · California locations · · MIMO editorial team

A furniture purchase should begin with the route into the apartment, especially when the building’s access arrangement is not yet clear. A room can accommodate an item even when the entrance route cannot.

Make a continuous route record

Start at the approved unloading location and follow the actual entrance the delivery team will use. Record the narrowest openings, direction changes, steps, elevator dimensions and unit door. Then follow the path to the room where the item will be used.

Do not substitute a general building photograph for measurements. Ask the property manager about which access route is permitted and any move-in reservation requirements. The route that looks easiest may be a restricted entrance or unavailable during the proposed delivery period.

Request product information before payment

For each bulky item, obtain carton dimensions, assembled dimensions, weight and assembly instructions. Ask whether removable components are intended to be detached and how this affects handling. A supplier’s delivery promise should identify the service being purchased: curbside, room delivery, assembly or something else.

For a boxed sofa, confirm the final expanded size as well as the box. A compact carton is useful only if the unpacking area and final placement also work. Record the manufacturer’s instructions for opening and positioning the product.

Keep a second option

If access is uncertain, compare a smaller item, an approved modular design or an alternative delivery arrangement before ordering. Do not make an unapproved lifting or hoisting method the default backup plan. Any specialist handling should be separately assessed and confirmed by qualified providers and the building.

Add the access survey to the request for quote so suppliers can respond to the real conditions. The San Francisco directory can locate the property, while a sofa-fit worksheet helps organize dimensions. Neither replaces the delivery team’s assessment or the building’s written approval. Resolving these points early is usually simpler than arguing about a failed delivery outside the entrance.
