Studio or one-bedroom: compare how you use the space

Evaluate a studio and a one-bedroom around sleep, work, storage and shared routines rather than square footage alone.

MIMO field notes · Apartment search · · MIMO editorial team

An extra bedroom door can matter more than extra floor area. It can also consume space that would be more useful in an open room. Choosing between a studio and a one-bedroom starts with how many activities need to happen at the same time.

List the activities that compete

Consider sleep, work calls, cooking, exercise and entertaining. If one person needs quiet while another cooks or speaks on a call, a separate bedroom may solve a real problem. If you live alone and spend little time working at home, a well-arranged studio may use its space efficiently.

Map the furniture you actually need onto each plan. Include the bed, work surface, seating and storage, then mark the door swings and walking routes. A room’s label does not prove that all of these fit. Avoid counting the same surface as both a dining table and an always-available desk unless you are comfortable moving work materials daily.

Compare the full setup

Daily requirement Studio question One-bedroom question
Work calls Can the camera view and background stay usable? Is there a workable desk location?
Sleep Can light and noise be managed in the same room? Does the bedroom suit the bed and storage?
Guests Is there seating beyond the bed? Does the living room work independently?
Storage Where do seasonal items go? Are closets actually larger or simply divided?

Look beyond the category

View the exact home when possible. A studio with a separate alcove and generous storage can feel very different from a rectangular room. A one-bedroom with a tight living area may require smaller furniture than you expect.

Finally compare rent, recurring charges and furnishing costs using confirmed figures. The better option is the one that supports your routines at a manageable total cost, not the one whose category sounds more substantial. For a furnished home, ask for the inventory and dimensions before assuming the existing setup meets your needs.
